CyberPunk 2077 is an up and coming CD Projekt Red game based on CyberPunk 2020, a cyberpunk themed role-playing table-top game, published by R. Talsorian Games. CyberPunk 2077 is set 57 years later taking place in Night City, a dystopian metropolis on the West Coast in the state of California.
CyberPunk was created by Mike Pondsmith. Pondsmith wrote the first edition simply called CyberPunk, then he wrote CyberPunk 2020; which CyberPunk 2077 is mainly based on, from the second edition. Pondsmith then finally wrote the 3rd edition CyberPunk V3.0.
Pondsmith states ‘CyberPunk is about technology gone wrong being used by people in novel ways against mega-corporations, powerful people, powerful forces and powerful governments etc that are all pretty much conspiring to keep people oppressed and stomped on. It’s a craptastic world.’
CyberPunk 2077 stars a customisable V, a gun for hire looking to ascend through the ranks in Night City. CD Projekt Red have consistently spoken at length about CyberPunk 2077s RPG elements. Players will be able to customise V from top to bottom with the game responding to V in a variety of ways based on appearance, further customisation also includes V’s class and even historical background giving players the ability to put as much of themselves into V or create wholly original takes on the character.
The classes of CyberPunk 2077 are heavily inspired from CyberPunk 2020. CyberPunk 2020 gave players 9 different classes to build their custom characters around such as Soloist, Rockerboy, Cops, Media etc, CyberPunk 2077 instead built 3 distinct skill trees born from the Soloist, Engineer and Net Runner classes of 2020 respectively to give players the agency to create a unique character and play-style of their choosing.
The gameplay of CyberPunk 2077 is from an entirely first-person perspective, allowing the players to truly immerse themselves in the character of V. Similar to Deus Ex CyberPunk 2077 focuses on gunplay and body modifications for various advantages in combat, these tools are just conventional props with different skins but weapons inspired by CyberPunks cynical take on technology.
In addition, CyberPunk 2077 includes an ‘interactive dialogue system’ granting the player more engrossment in the character and anecdotes of V meaning the choices and actions taken by the player will carry with them consequences that will impact their experience, ultimately the journey taken as V is very malleable to the player.
I am beyond excited for this game. The more I research and the more that I see the more my hype continues to shatter through into other dimensions.
I. CANNOT. WAIT. TO. PLAY. THIS. GAME. PERIOD.
Everything from the games transhuman/Cyberpunk setting to the RPG elements is a big fat W for me, I’m already conceiving builds and styles that I want to play in my mind, I’m gonna play as minimalist transhuman with an affinity towards engineering who would rather talk his way out of situations and stealth to avoid confrontations but has a brilliant ingenuity for violence if needed whilst also a slight saboteur as well. This game already has me tapped with no release date.
Yet another reason for why I am truly excited for CyberPunk 2077 is that it’s the creation of a black creative in Mike Pondsmith, not only would this game not exist without his creation of CyberPunk but for a black creative to share in my like for cyberpunk and the discussion surrounding technology, its impact on humanity and the future is inspiring and motivating. CyberPunk 2077 has exposed me to Mike Pondersmith and may even get me to consider playing the table-top games in the future.
You can also check out their 48 minute walkthrough gameplay so you can get a feel of how the game is going to be next year. We are hoping for a 2019 release date but I’ll fill you in on the official release date soon.
Hit me up so we can share in the excitement for CyberPunk 2077 together.
