With a week to go, anticipation for the final season of Game of Thrones, HBO’s all conquering series, is at an all-time high. It has been nearly 2 years since we saw Season 7 end on jaw dropping cliff-hanger. Since then fans have been left to speculate what is to come next, wondering how the series will end and who will end up on the Iron Throne.
Recently, I’ve seen more and more people on my twitter feed take the plunge into this generational show, people I would never expect to be hooked on a show about dragons, zombies and a never ending fight for the throne. As a Game of Thrones fan there is an excitement of seeing the reactions to each episode, especially Season 3, Episode 9! Our very own Steph built up a fantastic thread as she watched it for the series for the first time.
With some time to kill I decided to re-watch the show, one I started watching when I was 20 and by the time it returns next week I’ll be 28, because with 200+ characters, a myriad of plots and subplots, it is easy to forget some of the things have happened over the course of 67 episodes. 4 weekends late, I came away with 7 spoiler free reasons why it is not only a must watch show, but the Show of the Decade!
Game of Thrones doesn’t follow the rules of television. Across all genres on TV, main characters usually have a long shelf life. They are the face of a brand, bring in viewers and sell ad space. Game of Thrones literally destroys this unwritten rule.
Game of Thrones can’t be placed in one box. If you ask 10 people to describe it, you’ll get 10 different answers. One of Game of Thrones’ strengths is its ability to drawn upon so many different themes. Is it fantasy? Is it drama? Is it action?
Every conversation matters. With 10 episodes a season, there is no room for filler or fat, rarely do you watch an episode and wonder what the point was.
WTF OMG NO! moments. Most dramatic shows have WTF moments. Some dramatic shows have OMG moments. Not since ER’s heyday has a show delivered so many WTF OMG NO! did you see what happened last night water cooler moments. Game of Thrones does that, there have been so many of these kind of moments over the 67 episodes released: Season 1; Episode 9, Season 3; Episode 9, Season 5; Episode 10, are few examples of episodes that have left jaws on the floor.
Dragons! Skyscraper sized fire breathing dragons.
The cast is fantastic. Game of Thrones wouldn’t have lasted this long without the cast being able to bring George R. R. Martin’s characters to life. Thanks to fantastic acting, you grow to love these characters, you root for them, you mourn them and in some cases cheer for their demise. Expect Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and co to be collecting numerous gongs come award season.
Winter has Come! Since the airing of the first episode 8 years ago, the phrase ‘Winter is Coming’ has been mentioned, time and time again, foreboding to the climax of the series. 8 years later, the time has come. All roads lead to the Battle of Winterfell. How will Game of Thrones end?
